Touch and multitouch in and of themselves are not enough to significantly change the market for consumer electronics. It is the appropriate combination of multitouch with a user interface that is designed to be controlled with fingertip controls that is becoming a compelling experience for consumers. We have begun to see this in the smartphone market already.
With the launch of multiple tablet devices — the high-profile iPad being the most visible in this segment — it is likely that the use of multitouch and touch devices will continue to proliferate for consumers. This will further pressure PC makers to implement multitouch on their notebook and tablet PC products.
