Mobile trends

The mobile communication has already became an inherent part of the way of life of millions of people in the whole world. According to Gartner Institute study, until 2013, the mobile phones will surpass, in numbers, the traditional personal computers. And the number of mobile phones with web browsers embedded will surpass 1.82 billion of unities. In this reality, the smartphones have assumed a role even more focused on mobility, offering more connected functionalities. Because of that (and the constant evolution in this industry), the Nokia Technology Institute elected the top 10 topics about mobility that will be in the spotlight during 2011.
“The world never stopped to go through transformations in the way people interact and relate in the informations sphere. We understand that it is our role to research and develop new and improved ways to connect people, in the proportion and speed that technology allows us”, comments AndrĂ© Erthal, Service Experience area director in INdT.
4G Networks
According to a global trend and because of access technology diversities, the 4G network is going to become the ‘Network of networks’. This way, the idea to build a universal communications system, with a wide coverage and high capacity of transmission, may become reality pretty soon. According to INdT researchers, the most used applications used in the 4G networks are:
•    Digital video transmission in high definition (Digital TV, Pay-per-view TV and video calls)
•    Geo positioning and social networks
•    Digital Radio
•    Online gaming and Multiplayer (with augmented reality options)
•    Voice over IP (VoIP)
•    High Definition Video streaming
•    Music download and share
•    Internet for Automobiles
•    eCommerce and eMoney
Augmented Reality
Between the most interesting applications for augmented reality, the users can expect news on the GPS interface that uses the camera. When indicating the localisation for the user, anywhere in the globe, the system compiles informations of an environment recognition software that, when capturing the image using the camera lenses, shows further information about the places along its course. In some cases it will be possible to receive touristic, historical information, services and even discount coupons. In the health area it will also be possible to benefit from this technology, such as software that will support different sorts of treatments, in which a software will interact with the medicine package, for example, providing additional informations such as tables, informative labels or instructions that will facilitate some medical procedures.
Games
In 2011, the gaming market in mobile phones will only grow. The gaming applications are the most downloaded in App stores. Because of that, INdT has developed games, such as Pebol, a “cannon” game, that is available in the Praia, Planalto, Dunas, Natal, Pampas and AmazĂ´nia versions and an English version as well, the Pebol Beach. This series of games can be downloaded for free in the Ovi Store.
Cloud computing
It makes less and less sense the idea of becoming stuck with statical machines. The possibility of data storage and processing activities being executed somewhere else than the device is gaining more space. For regular mobile phones and smartphones it is an excellent solution. The current researches are determined to develop tools and technologies so that handsets can be connected all the time, with access to all services and files that may interest users, to access emails, edit spreadsheets, check presentations and texts, all directly from the cloud.
Security
The volume of personal information that people carry in their mobile phones is getting larger. Besides that, most of these devices can connect to the internet. To preserve the access to this data, more and more new security solutions are developed for mobile devices. INdT is developing the project “face recognition based device locks”, an application that allows the mobile phone to be locked through the process of recognising the user’s face. According to the INdT researchers this technology can arrive in the market this year.
Applications
Because of the great market of applications and its different platforms, what may happen in the near future is the compatibility of these apps between different mobile platforms. Besides that, the development tends to become faster, which will allow new applications to be developed practically on real time, in a way that applications will be released in the same proportion and timing of social events.
3D
The 3D technology has been one of the topics with most interest around the digital world and it is probably that this functionality will be transported to mobile phones soon, specially if the 3D glasses are not necessary. It may be used for games, applications and even in the device’s own graphical interface.
Social Networks expansion via mobile devices
The social networks tend to get more popular through the usage of applications in mobile devices, such as Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare. There are already applications to many devices, but they will probably be released for low end devices and other platforms. Other trend is the larger integration between social networks and services based on location that use the device’s GPS to interact in these platforms.
Music Creation
This year beckons for the popularization of applications for creating music on mobile devices. With Nokia Loop, for example, the user can capture snippets of their own voice, recorded music, the noise from the ignition of your car or anything else that comes to mind. The software also automatically adjusts the timing and tempo of its productions, turning the track into something harmonious without much complication. The program also lets you save the output to MP3 and set it as your default ringing telephone or share on Facebook.
Sustainability Education
Aligned with current requirements for green products and more human technologies, INdT develops projects aimed at sustainability and that rely on community involvement. In partnership with the Federal University of Amazonas, for example, applications are being developed that promote education for sustainable attitudes. The first projects are related to rational use of fuels and quality of life (health care):
- Fuel – Compares fuel consumption, indicating when it is worth for the consumer to fill up with ethanol or gasoline, noting that ethanol comes from renewable sources.
